Sun is the card of clarity, of the dissolving of all shadows and doubts. Almost at the end of the Major Arcana, we finally come to an understanding of the world, and this understanding is Love. Not the personal love that binds us to the rest of humanity, as expressed in Touch, but the universal love that speaks through the generous sharing of the sun’s warmth with all creatures, nurturing them to live, grow and prosper. It is a love without an agenda or self-centered motive. It is the love that saunters lightly through the sky. This is the card of vitality and joy, of the embrace of life, of the clarity that comes with understanding.

People often lead busy lives, multitasking their way through the day, struggling to keep all balls in the air. They move like speeding trains through a blurry landscape, painfully restricted to the tracks. Most moves prescribed by societal habits, education, social position or gender. Desire limited to the promise of direct gratification. Most of us prefer our pleasures to be prepackaged and safe. But every once in a while a glitch enters into the system. A small disruption that reminds us things also could be different.

0. hope

This is the very beginning of Hope’s journey, the zero point of the Major Arcana of the Tarot. In Greek mythology hope is connected to Pandora, the nosy maiden that got tricked into opening the box that contained all the miseries of the world, and in doing so set them free to roam the Earth: sickness, death, poverty and greed. Slamming the box shut in horror, she inadvertently confined hope in the box. The only remedy left to deal with the unleashed powers of misery. The state of the world in this card is the outcome of her indiscretion. The small city in the left corner is under threat of being swallowed by the waves. The skies are looming darkly, and the birds are fleeing the scene. Only the watchful eye of providence is looking on from a safe distance, but the inhabitants of the city cannot share in its rational magnanimity.
